Thoughts about this week’s Scripture:
Luke 13:1-9 Bearing fruit is an important theme in Jesus’ teaching ministry (Matthew 3:10, Luke 5: 43-44, John 15:5-8). In the remembering, we are tending the tree so that we can produce more fruit. We are remembering what it is we cling to; we are remembering the lights of home, and we are learning to live as though it might be our last days. Jesus does not call us to fatalism, but to a way of clinging to life, the full life, the fruitful life. We are not waiting for a proper time, because now is the proper time. We are not waiting for our season, because this is our season. Even in the darkness of night, this is our season. To what do you cling? Perhaps your first reaction is, “No, I don’t cling. Clingy is not a good adjective for people. Let’s move on to something else.” Hold on. Maybe you’ve sung this: “Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to the cross I cling.” Or “I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown.” There are even more contemporary songs with the idea of clinging to Jesus, including one by Sovereign Grace titled “Cling to Christ.” And that song has a verse that says: It’s more than I can do / To keep my hold on You But all my hope and peace / Is that You cling to me. Psalm 63:1-8
The psalm invites us to thirst for God, to hunger for God’s presence in our daily lives—the low moments as well as the high ones, and especially throughout daily life. We need to cultivate an awareness of God as we worship so that when we are apart from the community, we still have that sense of not being alone. Our singing can express that reaching, that hungering for a glimpse of God’s presence. We can sing of the desire to have something to cling to and the promise to do so as much as we are able and then rely on the community that surrounds us to help us with our grip. So, let our prayers be an invitation to see the resource that fills the pews around us. We can give thanks for one another and for the witness and the willingness to be that body that encourages and mentors and challenges and holds us accountable. We can celebrate and petition at the same time. The Christ we cling to often can be found in the people around us. The faith we cling to can be seen in the relationships of faith. We don’t cling to abstract ideas, but to real incarnations lived before us. Discipleship Ministries
O God, you are our God, help us to seek you with every fiber of our being, to praise you with every breath, to cling to you as if our lives depended upon it. Because they do. Reach down and hold us up, God. Hold us up. Amen.

![]() Meeting on Wednesday's
starting March 12th thru April 16th. From 6 to 7:30pm. Lenten Soup and Study: "Meeting Jesus at the Table" The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus sharing meals with disciples, friends, even tax collectors and Pharisees. Whether multiplying bread to feed a whole crowd, relaxing with his inner circle, or telling curious elites stories about even greater banquets, Jesus imparts wisdom as he shares the wine and grants forgiveness as he distributes the fish. This eight-chapter resource provides biblical insights along with thought-provoking queries regarding our own time, such as whom should we invite to Sunday dinner and who is left out and left behind in our culture today. Join the Journey community as we will share soup and fellowship time as well as learning what it means to Meet Jesus at the Table.
