Thoughts about this week’s Scripture
Luke 5:1-11 from The Message Translation Push Out into Deep Water Once when he was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, the crowd was pushing in on him to better hear the Word of God. He noticed two boats tied up. The fishermen had just left them and were out scrubbing their nets. He climbed into the boat that was Simon’s and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Sitting there, using the boat for a pulpit, he taught the crowd. When he finished teaching, he said to Simon, “Push out into deep water and let your nets out for a catch.” Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity. They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch. Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. “Master, leave. I’m a sinner and can’t handle this holiness. Leave me to myself.” When they pulled in that catch of fish, awe overwhelmed Simon and everyone with him. It was the same with James and John, Zebedee’s sons, coworkers with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “There is nothing to fear. From now on you’ll be fishing for men and women.” They pulled their boats up on the beach, left them, nets and all, and followed him. We are talking about priorities this week. In what do we put our trust? By what scale do we measure our value? This could be a day for a statement of faith to remind us where our allegiance lies. Like Peter in the boat, we have the opportunity to leave everything and follow Jesus—or to reaffirm our commitment to follow unhesitatingly. That, of course, means we need space for confession. We have made this commitment before and yet have mixed up our priorities again and again. In the face of the purity of Christ’s invitation and presence, we see how far we fall short. This need not be a groveling, painful expression, but an admission of the distractions of this life and the longings of the self that keep us from the ability to keep our eyes on Jesus day by day. |
We wrap our confession with an invitation to the Spirit to sustain us in our weakness and sinfulness and guide us when we stray.
Peter was open. He didn’t know it, because he wasn’t paying attention, but he was. He was open to going deep, even though it was against his better judgment, even though it wasn’t the way things were done in his business, even though he had been unsuccessful the night before. He was open, and that small opening is all it takes for miracles to occur. We need to be willing to look deeper and live deeper. There is so much right in front of our faces, and we miss it. Then Jesus comes and says, “Go deeper.” “From now on you will be catching people.” As he did that day on Lake Gennesaret, as he did because he lived deeply. As he has done for the past two thousand years, he gathers up those who long to live deeply and to live aware of life. It is no wonder that when they came to shore, they walked away from the fish, the biggest catch in their careers. They walked away to go deep. Discipleship Ministries
Rev. Sherry Bryant-Johnson, an ordained United Methodist deacon, recently retired from almost three decades of serving extension ministry appointments. She continues to live out her calling as a teacher, author, and spiritual director. God, who is ever present with us in our struggles, give us the trust to come to you as we are. Gant us the courage to embrace what you call us to embrace and release what you call us to release, so that we can be the disciples you call us to be. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
