Focus Scripture: Luke 3:10-13
When we talk of John the Baptist we most often focus on how he baptized Jesus. But Luke also sets forth John's teachings. When people ask him what they should do, how they can turn their lives around, John does not tell them to become religious. He does not tell them to pray. He talks to them about money and wealth. If you have more than your need, give it to someone who has need. If you have two shirts--give one away. I wonder what he would say about 30+ pairs of shoes (not to mention dozen pairs of flip-flops) in this closet.
To tax collectors, John says, be honest in your dealings. What would John say about modern business practices?
John was indeed paving the way for Jesus who also talked about money. Money, our obsession with it, our hoarding it, our love of it, is the greatest threat to our spiritual well being and the source of most of society's ills.
