Focus Scripture: Isaiah 61:1-3
Jesus himself claimed that he fulfilled the words of Isaiah 61. He came to preach good news to the poor and release for the captives. He came to bring good news to those who suffer. It may seem surprising to us now, when we consider the many preachers who claim that Jesus wants people to be rich, or the many churches that have a reputation for only accepting the "right" kind of people. But Jesus did not come to make us monetarily rich. Jesus did not favor those in power or those with influence or those who were or thought they were better than others.
Jesus came for the poor, the oppressed, the ill, and the suffering. Jesus did not come to make them rich, but to bring good news and to give them hope and relieve their suffering. Jesus came, as Go With Us, to identify and take on their suffering. From as far back as Isaiah, God made his care for the suffering known.
Who in our world is suffering? Who is God speaking to today in Isaiah 61?
