Focus Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:11-12
There are a lot of words used to try to describe God. "Omnipotent" means all powerful. "Omnipresent" means that God is present everywhere. "Omniscient" means that God knows everything. These words help us understand the nature of God. But one of the most meaningful words to describe God is "ineffable," which means that God is so great and powerful as to defy description. God cannot be completely described or understood.
Paul is saying the same thing when he says that only the Spirit of God can know the thoughts of God. We, however, have some understanding when we receive the Spirit. Indeed it is through the Spirit that we know God. Without being open to the Spirit, we cannot know or understand God. Without the Spirit, descriptions of God, and especially faith in God, seems bizarre and foolish. But with the Spirit, not only does God make sense, but life itself makes sense.
